Originally known as the Taiwan Endemic Species Research Institute, ESRI was established on July 1, 1992 under the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of the Taiwan Provincial Government. After the downsizing of the Taiwan Provincial Government, the Institute came under the jurisdiction of the Council of Agriculture (COA) of the Executive Yuan on July 1, 1999 and changed its name to the Endemic Species Research Institute, COA, Executive Yuan. Its primary mission as an experimental research organization is to undertake survey and research on Taiwan’s rare and endemic wild animals, plants, habitats and ecosystems, and to promote ecological education.
