For hundreds of years, humans have neglected the natural environment and have failed to educate others about the importance of protecting it and conserving its resources. This has led to the squandering of natural resources, the destruction of ecosystems, and has led the human race to a major crisis in its sustain able development and even survival. In response to this, Article 13 of the Convention on Biological Diversity calls on signatory parties to “promote and encourage understanding of biodiversity conservation, and cooperate internationally in biodiversity education and public awareness programmes” so that ordinary people can understand global trends in biodiversity conservation and the services provided by ecosystems to humans.
