Experimental Station Research

  To meet the overall requirements of conservation research, the Institute has established three experimental stations at low-, medium-, and high-altitude elevations for the purpose of wild animal rearing and breeding, plant cultivation and repopulation, germplasm conservation, long-term monitoring, and other experimental research. The Low, Medium and High Altitude Experimental Stations cover a total area of 850 hectares. They not only provide a research base for ESRI’s researchers, but also play an extremely important role in the Institute’s work of species conservation and ecosystem maintenance.

a. Low Altitude Experimental Station

  Located at Wushihkeng in Zihyou Village, Heping Township, Taichung County, the Low Altitude Experimental Station covers around 353 hectares of national forest within the 122nd compartment of the Daan Creek working circle. At 670 to 1,834 meters in elevation, it provides an ideal location for the long-term monitoring of broadleaf forest ecosystems.

b. Medium Altitude Experimental Station

  Situated near Tengjhih in Baoshan Village, Taoyuan Township, Kaohsiung County, the Medium Altitude Experimental Station covers around 219 hectares of national forest within the 57th compartment of the Laonong Creek working circle at 1,160 to 2,635 meters in elevation. Vegetation includes Tsuga-Picea zone, Quercus zone, and Machilus-Castanopsis zone forest; the Station provides an excellent base for the long-term monitoring of coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest ecosystems.

c. High Altitude Experimental Station

  Sited next to North Hehuanshan at the meeting point of Hualien County’s Sioulin Township and Nantou County’s Renai Township, the High Altitude Experimental Station covers around 250 hectares of national forest within the 80th compartment of the Dajia Creek working circle and the 68th compartment of the Liwu Creek working circle. At between 2,800 and 3,422 meters in elevation, it provides a location for the long-term monitoring of sub-alpine ecosystems.
